CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games Thursday night at the Cathedral City Classic at Big League Dreams Sports Park. The Aztecs (5-5) fell to Indiana, 3-2, in eight innings before an 11-3, six-inning loss to No. 8/10 Tennessee.

The opening game featured a pitching duel between the 1-2 punch of SDSU senior All-American Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) and junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.), and Hoosier (6-6) star Morgan Melloh. The three pitchers combined for 26 strikeouts, while allowing just nine hits.

Beasley started the game for San Diego State and gave up two runs on three hits and two walks over five innings. She struck out 12 for her first double-digit strikeout game of the season and 23rd of her career. Micetich (3-4) was saddled with the loss after giving up one unearned run on two hits and a walk over 2 1/3 innings of relief. She struck out one.

The Aztecs had tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning when redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) singled home redshirt freshman Devin Gray (Durham, Calif.).

After SDSU was unable to score with the international tiebreaker in effect in the top of the eighth, Indiana got runners to first and third with one out. Amanda Wagner then hit a ball deep in the hole to San Diego State senior shortstop Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.), who was unable to get the forceout at second and turn a possible double play. Lindsay Callanan trotted home from third with the game-winning run.

Junior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) homered in the second and walked twice for the Aztecs. Classmate Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) singled and drew a walk, while Marquez and sophomore Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) each added singles.

Melloh, a two-time first-team NFCA all-Far West Region selection while at Fresno State from 2008-10, struck out 13 SDSU players. She yielded two runs on four hits and five walks.

In the nightcap, the Lady Vols broke open a 5-3 game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to run-rule San Diego State, 11-3.

After falling behind, 5-0, after three frames, the Aztecs scored twice in the fourth and another in the fifth to keep the game close. Maeva got things going in the fourth with a leadoff single before being replaced at first base by redshirt sophomore Roshana Lavery (San Diego/Mission Bay HS). One batter later, sophomore Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) tripled to right center to put SDSU on the scoreboard. After Rose drew a five-pitch walk, freshman Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) reached on an infield single, which allowed May to score.

In the fifth, senior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) drew a one-out walk and stole second one batter later. Maeva came through once again with a single down the left field line to bring San Diego State to within two runs.

However, Tennessee, the Aztecs' fourth opponent already that advanced to last year's Women's College World Series, scored six times in the sixth on five hits and two SDSU errors for the 11-3 win.

Maeva had two of San Diego State's hits, while Camello reached twice with a single and a walk. Kristin May, Wisneski and Miles also chipped in with a hit apiece.

Micetich took the loss after surrendering five runs on eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. She struck out four. Kamerin May replaced Micetich in the third and kept the Lady Vols scoreless for three frames before the big sixth inning. She finished the game with six runs allowed (four earned) on seven hits, breaking her career-long 14 2/3 scoreless inning streak (dating back to last year).

Kat Dotson had three hits, three runs and four RBIs for Tennessee, while Raven Chavanne added three hits. Ivy Renfroe pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to improve to 5-1.

The Aztecs continue their play in the Cathedral City Classic tomorrow (Friday) with a 1 p.m. PT contest against No. 4/5 Florida.
