ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Freshman Allison Reaser won the pentathlon with a school-record 3,916 points to lead San Diego State on the first day of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Reaser set collegiate personal bests in all five events to break Aja Makaila Frary's total of 3,902 points, set in 2000. Reaser defeated 13 others in the event, including runner-up Brianna LeRoy (3,654) of Utah by 262 points. Heading into this weekend, only 15 athletes had scored higher than Reaser's 3,916 points and none were freshmen.
"Allison was fantastic today," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "She competed with poise and was focused in every event. It was a great way to start the weekend."
Reaser opened the day by finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49 seconds, the fifth-fastest mark in school history. Reaser lowered her time each race this season from 8.83 in the preliminary heat at the New Mexico Invitational on Jan. 29 to the 8.49 today.
In the high jump, Reaser cleared 5 feet, 4 ½ inches, which tied her for third among the pentathletes. Her best jump this season had been 5-03.00.
Reaser followed with a first-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 38-04.25, easily beating her previous best mark of 36-11.50 set at the Don Kirby Invitational on Feb. 11.
Reaser won her second consecutive event, taking the long jump with a leap of 19-02.75. The mark improved on her sixth-best indoor jump in program history.
Needing to run a 2:33.34 in the 800 to tie Aja Makaila Frary's school record, Reaser ran a 2:32.14 in the final event of the day to give the Aztecs their first pentathlon champion since Leslie Miller in 2004.
SDSU is in first after the pentathlon with 10 points, followed by Brigham Young (8), Utah (8), Colorado State (7), New Mexico (5) and Air Force (1).
Friday's action kicks off for San Diego State with the weight throw beginning a 1 p.m. MT.
