Aztec Softball to Play Three Top-10 Teams at Cathedral City Classic
The San Diego State softball team travels to the Palm Springs area this weekend to take part in the prestigious Cathedral City Classic.
The Aztecs (5-3), who are 11 points out of the top 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball national poll, play five games over four days at the 34-team tournament. Of those 34 teams, 15 are ranked in the USA Today/NFCA top 25 and 14 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
SDSU will play Indiana (6 p.m. PT) and No. 8/10 Tennessee (8:30 p.m. PT) at Yankee Field on Thursday, No. 4/5 Florida (1 p.m. PT) at Wrigley Field on Friday, (rv/rv) Florida State (8:30 p.m. PT) at Yankee Field on Saturday, and No. 3/1 Arizona (3 p.m. PT) at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
Each of San Diego State's losses this season have come against top-10 teams and 2010 Women's College World Series foes. This weekend, the Aztecs' top-10 opponents - Tennessee, Florida and Arizona - also advanced to last year's WCWS.
Last weekend, SDSU went 1-2 at the rain-shortened San Diego Classic I. San Diego State downed Sacramento State, 4-2, on Thursday, before falling to No. 8/10 Missouri, 9-1, in five innings in the nightcap, and to No. 10/11 Washington, 6-3, on Sunday after committing six errors and leaving 12 on base.
Sophomore Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) leads the Aztecs with a .421 average, while senior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) (.333) and redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) (.316) are also hitting over .300 for SDSU. Freshman Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) has all three of the team's home runs and leads with eight RBIs. Junior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) leads the pitching staff with a 3-2 record and 2.43 ERA.
