YORBA LINDA, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team maintained its day-one lead, winning the Gold Rush tournament title by eight strokes over second place and host Long Beach State Tuesday at the par-72, 6,108-yard Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif. The Aztecs finished strong, posting the best round of the entire 54-hole tournament with a 303, to come in at 54-over 918.
SDSU had three players finish in the top eight of the 65-golfer field. Junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) moved past senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) as the Aztecs' top finisher, firing her best round of the week with a 2-over 74, including three birdies with one on her final hole to card a 10-over 226, which was good for third place. Arcala was just one stroke behind her with an 11-over 227, which she capped with a 4-over 76 for fourth place.
Sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) maintained her spot on the individual leaderboard with her final-round 77 for a 15-over 231 to tie for eighth place. Classmate Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), meanwhile, improved from 18th up to a tie for 13th place at 18-over 234, including a 76 over the final 18 holes, highlighted by four birdies.
Senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) completed the SDSU starting five by cutting eight strokes off her second round total with a 77 to vault from 50th all the way into a tie for 33rd with a 27-over 243. Sophomore Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) and redshirt freshman Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Ariz.), both competing as individuals, ended up in 39th and 51st place, respectively.
Long Beach State's Simone Hoey led throughout the tournament, carding a final-round 72 to finish at 3-over 219, six strokes better than her teammate and second-place finisher Monica Villarreal.
San Diego State will be back in action the end of the month when it heads to the Bruin/Wave Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif., Feb. 28-March 2.
