San Diego State junior golfer J.J. Spaun posted his second consecutive sub-70 round to finish in fifth place on the individual leaderboard at 3-under 207 on Tuesday at the 54-hole the Battle at the Beach tournament in Newport Coast, Calif. As a team, the Aztecs remained in seventh place with a 29-over 1079, just two strokes behind sixth place Tennessee at the par-70, 6,900-yard The Resort at Pelican Hill.

Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) was one of two SDSU players to post a 68, which tied as the low round in the field over the final 18 holes. Spaun had 12 pars and four birdies compared to only two bogeys on the second and 16th holes. He was one of only five in the 82-golfer field to finish the event under par and was just one stroke out of forcing a three-way tie for third place.

Aztec sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) matched Spaun's final-round 68, highlighted by six birdies, and moved from 49th all the way into a tie for 23rd place at 6-over 216. Junior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) was the team's third-highest finisher coming in 35th with a 219, while Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) ended up in 50th place after carding a pair of triple bogeys for a final-round 79.

Senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted his second consecutive 73 to tie for 52nd with a 223, and freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) came in 62nd place with a 225, despite recording the team's only eagle of the tournament.

San Diego's Kenneth McCready led throughout and claimed medalist honors with a 7-under 203, but the Toreros lost the team title on the final day to UCLA, which rallied to win by three strokes with a 7-over 1057.

San Diego State will remain in California for its next event, the USC Invitational in Westlake Village, Feb. 28-March 1.
