COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior outfielder Brandon Meredith has been selected to the 11-man all-Mountain West Conference preseason baseball team in a vote of the league's seven coaches and a selected media panel. Meredith, a preseason second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, is the lone SDSU player named to the squad.
It was also announced that, for the second straight season, the Aztecs have been picked to finish third in the final regular-season standings. SDSU finished third last season with a 13-11 mark in conference play (28-28 overall).
Meredith, a junior for Chula Vista, Calif. (Montgomery HS), is a returning first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection who batted .383 last season with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 54 runs batted in. He led the MWC in league contests with a .489 batting average over 22 games with seven doubles, four home runs and 27 RBI. He compiled a .705 slugging and .575 on-base percentage in conference action as well.
Five-time defending Mountain West Conference champion TCU was the unanimous favorite to win its sixth consecutive regular season MWC baseball title in 2011. The Horned Frogs received all 16 first-place votes and 112 points overall, while Brigham Young garnered 84 points to finish second in the poll. San Diego State collected 75 points for a third-place ranking in the poll while New Mexico was fourth (71 points). Rounding out the poll were UNLV in fifth (45 points), Utah in sixth (43 points) and Air Force in seventh (18 points).
San Diego State will open its 2011 season on Friday, Feb. 18, when Winthrop visits Tony Gwynn Stadium for a contest scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
