Battle at the Beach - Day One Results in PDF Format
In a field with nine schools ranked in the top 50 nationally, the No. 10 San Diego State men's golf team is in ninth place after the first round of the 54-hole the Battle at the Beach tournament Sunday in Newport Coast, Calif. The Aztecs posted a 12-over 362, and are seven strokes in back of UC Davis and Tennessee, which are both tied for seventh place at 5-over 355 at the par-70, 6,900-yard The Resort at Pelican Hill.
Two SDSU golfers, juniors Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), are currently tied for 15th place with an even-par 70. Kang had two birdies to offset his two bogeys, while recording pars on the remaining 14 holes. Spaun carded a team-best five birdies on the day and was at 3-under par before notching a double bogey and a bogey on his final two holes.
Aztec junior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) is in a seven-way tie for 37th place with his 2-over 72, while sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) is one stroke in back of him in 44th place with a 73. Senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) will look to make up some ground on Monday, after posting first-round scores of 77 and 79, respectively.
San Diego's Kenneth McCready owns a one-stroke advantage over Washington's Ty Chambers on the individual leaderboard through 18 holes with a 5-under 65. The Toreros also lead the team race as the only squad under par with a first-round 2-under 348.
