LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Sunday in Los Angeles. The Aztecs (4-1), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball national polls, shut out Utah State, 2-0, before falling to top-ranked UCLA, 8-2.

In the opener, SDSU pitchers Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.), Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) and Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) combined for a five-hit shutout over the Aggies (1-4). May earned the start and allowed two hits over three innings, while striking out one. Micetich (2-1) struck out four and gave up two hits over the next two frames. Beasley picked up the save with two strikeouts and one hit allowed over the final two innings.

San Diego State managed only four hits off USU starter Mandy Harmon (1-3), but did draw three walks and a hit batter.

The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the first inning thanks to some good baserunning by freshman Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.). Miles led off the game with a walk and stole second base one batter later. She advanced to third on a flyout by freshman Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS), and then scored on a single to right field by junior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS).

After two perfect innings by Harmon, SDSU struck again in the fourth when Kamerin May's single scored senior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) from second. San Diego State loaded the bases later in the inning but was unable to get another run across the plate.

Miles (single, walk), Maeva (single, walk) and senior Eva Sahatdjian (walk, hit by pitch) each reached base safely twice for the Aztecs.

In the nightcap, SDSU jumped on the defending national champion Bruins (5-0) with two runs in the top of the first, but couldn't hold on in the 8-2 loss.

Back-to-back doubles by Miles and redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) gave San Diego State the quick lead. After Marquez moved to third on a flyout by Klopp, Maeva singled through the left side to put the Aztecs up, 2-0, with just one out. SDSU got two runners in scoring position with two outs, but were unable to come through with another score.

Andrea Harrison answered for UCLA in a big way, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two home runs, six RBIs, two runs and a walk. She had an RBI single in the third, a three-run homer in the fifth and a two-run home run in the sixth. GiOnna DiSalvatore's single scored the Bruins' other two runs in the sixth.

Marquez doubled twice and Maeva added two singles to pace the San Diego State offense. Miles reached twice with a double and a walk.

Micetich took the loss after yielding four runs on six hits over three innings of relief. Klopp started the game and gave up two walks and a hit over two innings, while striking out one. Beasley allowed four runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of work.

The Aztecs open up their home portion of their schedule at 7 p.m. Thursday against Sacramento State in the first game of the San Diego Classic I.
