SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men's tennis team won the doubles point but was unable to score a point in singles play Friday as 54th-ranked UC Irvine upended the 53rd-ranked Aztecs, 6-1, in a match was closer than the final score would indicate.
SDSU received victories at number two doubles from Juan Florez and Javier Pulgar and at number three doubles from Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert to record the doubles point.
In singles play, the Aztecs won plenty of games but were unavble to break through on the scoreboard. Schulz van Endert won 12 games at number five singles, but suffered a 7-6, 7-6 loss to UC Irvine's Stephen Stege. At number one singles, Pulgar won six games off Chris Kearney, the nation's 33rd-ranked player, before falling 6-4, 6-2.
The Aztecs are now 1-5 on the season, while the Anteaters improve to 4-4.
San Diego State will be back in action on Tuesday when the Aztecs play host to Boise State. First serve at the Aztec Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m. PT.
