FORT COLLINS, Colo. -
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
General Statement:
"We did the most important thing, we got a win. We came away with a win, we competed hard. We missed a lot of shots, as they did. We missed a lot of shots around the rim that normally we would make; I think they would say the same thing. This was a tough hard fought game. You take a deep breath and feel good that you walked out of here with a victory."
On Colorado State's Travis Franklin:
"He is a load; he is a hard guy to guard. Franklin put several of our guys into early foul trouble. We were early in the game with a lot of guys with two fouls saying `what do we do now?' We were able to have the bench come in and give us good solid play."
Colorado State Head Coach Tim Miles:
Opening statement:
"We'll it's a disappointing loss. Give credit to San Diego State, their defense was really good. The game was really physical, which was fine with us. DJ Gay made a very good play, we score and get back in transition. First off Andy made a very good play stopping the initial move, he came down hustled down and stopped the ball and got DJ going left. He made a nice inside out move and hit a jumper fading away. That's a mark of a very good play and a guy that is a winner."
On CSU shooting too soon on their last possession:
"No, not when you're behind. When you're behind, just score."
On a discussion of what to do if CSU scored on their final possession:
"On occasion we discuss what to do. We want to pick up and get them under control and play defense. Our guys know what to do. DJ Gay made a good play, it's not like they came down and shot a layup. We went down got the ball stopped. He went in and made a great one on one play."
On SDSU's second half that forced CSU deep into the shot clock:
"First of all Wes Eikmeir was clearly ineffective so we were without a handler and against those guys you need more handlers. Even at the end we had Pierce, Will Bell and Andy, and they're going to make a mess of a lane, so Dorian has nowhere to go. I think being short a handler really hurt us and made it harder on us. Here's the four possessions that hurt us. The order was Dorian dribbled it off his foot out of bounds. Franklin dribbles it off his foot out of bounds or basically to them. We get the three second call when Pierce doesn't put it right back up and then they poked it away from Andy. Those are four possessions where we had an advantage or should have had an advantage and just dribbled it off our foot. San Diego State does that with their length and athleticism. We couldn't space the floor on them at all. We made two three probably." On Wes' health:
"Just the speed of the game, being out as long as he was really hurt him. We will have to find out about his foot tomorrow. We're getting an MRI tomorrow to make sure there is no structural issue. This is the soonest we could get in since we requested it Monday."
On tentative inside shots:
"We over-dribbled. I think it was because we couldn't space the floor. We played more in a crowd than we're used to. We out rebound them, we get more offensive rebounds than they did, we hold them to 40 percent from the field. I just felt like we knew early in the game that was the way we were going to have to win. We still only had 12 turnovers against the number six team in the country. They were hurtful that's for sure."
On Dorian Green not closing out on DJ Gay's final shot:
"He kind of inside-outed him and hopped back a bit. As he came down initially Andy closed out on him so we had him double teamed, that got him going left. That was good we stopped the initial straight line down the court. Now you're just one-on-one and it's a tie game so he can drive he can pull up and shoot he can do whatever he wants. And that's hard to defend, you're not just chasing him off the three point line. It's open flow and that's what we tried to get against them last year with 5.6 seconds when we're down one and Franklin holds it for a bit and throws it to Travis Busch, not our point guard and we try to get the same thing off that transition and attack early. He made a good play.
On keeping D.J. Gay from driving on the last possession:
At the end of the day if we give up contested outside shots were ok. Now if Green got there to contest or not, he was in the same gym, he was there and Gay was falling back to his left. It wasn't like he was just out there playing horse.
On SDSU not taking a timeout:
"No, we told our guys if we score get back, hustle back get the ball stopped, contest the shot and rebound. That's what we do. We practice mini-games and games every day. The guys know what to do, they just made a good offensive play."
On the loss:
"Competitive people pick themselves up and get ready to go play at Wyoming and put our self in a position to win." On San Diego State's Kawhi Leonard:
"He got it cooking a little bit. But Rahon is the guy that got away from us he made some really good plays that were really critical. If we had gotten an effort like that the outcome would have been different."
On the crowd:
"Our students are phenomenal. I got chills once. The score was close and we were coming out of a timeout. The students were hopping and jumping and I just got chills coming up my spine and that's what you want college basketball to be. You want your team to experience that and your players to remember that and I would love us to win one. I was really thrilled with our fans, all our fans came out but our students were really lights out."
Colorado State fowaqrd Travis Franklin
On the last layup:
"Well we tied the game up, so I thought we might be going into overtime."
Colorado State guard Dorian Green
On CSU's defense after Franklin's layup:
"That situation is pretty chaotic. We just had to get the ball under control, and force them to take a tough shot. Unfortunately Gay's shot wasn't a tough shot."
On SDSU not calling a timeout:
"That makes it a lot harder. It's just chaos. The offense has an advantage because they can just throw it up there and hit the boards."
On Gay's shot:
"He was pretty open. He had time to create enough space so it was a pretty easy shot."
On the loss:
"It's tough, especially to lose like that in your own building. It's very tough."
Colorado State forward Andy Ogide
On comparing this game to the BYU game:
"It's not good enough. We expected to win this game and we didn't; it's not good enough."
On free throws tonight:
"Well we shot ourselves in the foot in the first half and again in the second half by not making free throws, but at the end we did. We just didn't close it out. You can blame it on free throws, or on any of the things that we didn't do right."
On looking past this game:
"We have to. We have the Boarder War on Saturday. Although they might not be playing too well, it's their Super Bowl, so we have to make sure we go up to Wyoming ready to fight, and not lose where we are at right now. There's still a lot of conference left to be played, and we can still bounce back."
On Kawhi Leonard dominating the boards:
"He is strong, and he's always in the right position. When you have that kind of combination, you have to do a better job of getting him off of the boards. When we go up to San Diego State, that's what we'll do."
On SDSU contesting CSU's inside shots:
"It was harder to get post touches this game for whatever reason, but we've played against plenty of shot blockers, so I'm not sure. It was definitely harder to get post touches."
On SDSU being the most athletic team CSU has faces this season:
"Top to bottom, yes."
