LOS ANGELES - The No. 52 San Diego State men's tennis team had a rough second day at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event in Los Angeles on Saturday, losing to conference rival No. 42 BYU, 4-0.
The Aztecs started the day slow, dropping the doubles point to the Cougars in two matches. Javier Pulgar and Juan Florez were tied 7-7 in a battle with BYU's Spencer Smith and Thomas Shubert before the match was suspended after BYU had wrapped up the point.
The Red and Black then ran into some bad luck during the No. 5 singles match when Juan Florez had to concede the point due to injury. No. 2 singles player Giovanni Vaglietti (6-3, 6-2) and No. 4 singles senior Tim Schulz van Endert (6-2, 6-3) went down in straight sets to give BYU the team win.
San Diego State junior Javier Pulgar was engaged in a battle with the nation's 110th-ranked Evan Urbina at No. 1 before that contest was cut short.
San Diego State (1-2) is back in action Saturday, Feb.5, when the Aztecs travel to Fresno, Calif. to face the undefeated Texas Tech Red Raiders.
