No. 4 San Diego State Looks to Rebound From First Loss with Home Game Saturday Night Against Wyoming
Fourth-ranked San Diego State (20-1 overall; 5-1 Mountain West Conference) looks to rebound from its first loss in 314 days when the Aztecs put their 14-game home court winning streak on the line this Saturday against Wyoming (8-12 overall; 1-5 MWC).
Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT and the game will be televised by The Mtn. (San Diego Cox Cable 320, DirecTV 616, Orange County Cox Cable 265, Las Vegas Cox Cable 334). The game can also be heard on radio in Southern California on AM 600 KOGO.
On Wednesday night, San Diego State became the 335th Division I school to suffer a loss this season (there are 336 Division I schools playing men's basketball), as the Aztecs fell to ninth-ranked Brigham Young, 71-58, at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. The game was close throughout with 15 lead changes and seven ties. Neither team led by more than four points in the first 28 minutes of the game. The Cougars led 56-52 with 7:23 to play, and San Diego State had four offensive possessions to cut into the deficit, but was unable to do so. Brigham Young made 11 free throws in the final 3:33 of the game to provide the final outcome.
The Aztecs shot just 35.5 percent from the field and connected on just 5-of-20 attempts from three-point range. SDSU enjoyed a 42-35 edge in rebounds and parlayed that into a 13-2 edge in second-chance points. Sophomore forward Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double, his 14th of the season (tied for fourth in the nation) and the 31st of his career (second in school history to Michael Cage's 61). Senior forward Malcolm Thomas added 10 points and six rebounds, while senior guard D.J. Gay had four assists two steals and no turnovers in 37 minutes of action. The Cougars were led by Jimmer Fredette, who scored 43 points. That is the highest point total posted against the Aztecs since Ruben Douglas scored 43 points for New Mexico on Feb. 24, 2003.
San Diego State is looking to rebound from a loss for the first time this season. The Aztecs have responded from its last five losses with a victory and is 11-1 in the game following its last 12 defeats.
The Aztecs and Cowboys are meeting for the 68th time with Wyoming enjoying a 37-30 series advantage. San Diego State is 4-2 in the last six meetings between the teams, but Wyoming is one of only three Mountain West Conference teams (Brigham Young and New Mexico) to defeat the Aztecs in each of the last two seasons.
Following the game, SDSU will complete the first half of MWC play with a road game at Colorado State (14-6 overall; 4-2 MWC) on Wednesday. The Rams are 7-2 at home this season with their only home loss in their last seven games at Moby Arena coming to ninth-ranked BYU.
