LOS ANGELES - San Diego State senior Tim Schulz van Endert defeated one of the nation's top-ranked singles players on Friday afternoon, but it was not enough, as second-ranked USC defeated 52-ranked San Diego State, 6-1, in the opening day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Schulz van Endert dropped only three games in disposing of 84th-ranked Peter Lucassen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at number four singles.
Although the Trojans (4-0) won the doubles point and the other five singles matches, Aztec players forced first-set tiebreakers at both number two and number six singles. At number two singles, senior Giovanni Vaglietti pushed the nation's 18th-ranked player, Daniel Nguyen, early before falling, 7-6 (4), 6-2. At number six singles, freshman Hunter Nicholas was competitive throughout, dropping a 7-6 (4), 7-5, decision to Michael Grant.
In the day's other match, 46th-ranked Indiana defeated 43rd-ranked Brigham Young, 4-3. Tomorrow, USC and Indiana will play for the right to advance to next month's ITA National Indoor Championships.
San Diego State (1-1) is back in action tomorrow when the Aztecs face 43rd-ranked Brigham Young in the consolation match of the event. First serve is set for 10 a.m. PT at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles.
