COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior forward Malcolm Thomas was named Mountain West Conference co-player of the week, the league announced Monday morning. The honor is Thomas' third of his career and third of the season after helping the Aztecs post two wins on the road.
At TCU, Thomas had 18 points (8-10 FG), 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals. The double-double was his third of the season and his 18 points were two off his season high set against San Diego. He led the team in scoring for the fourth time in 2001-11 and for the 13th time in his career. The double-figure scoring effort was his seventh straight and his eight field goals were a season best. His 8-for-10 performance from the field marked the seventh straight game in which he finished with a field-goal percentage of 50 percent or better.
At Utah, Thomas (17 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots) recorded his second straight double-double, his fourth of the season and the 14th of his career with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The senior's scoring output was his team-best eighth straight game with 10 or more points and the San Diego native posted his fourth straight nine-plus rebound game. Thomas' 14 rebounds were tied for the second most by an Aztec player this season. He had 15 against Cal Poly.
For the week, the senior averaged team-best figures in points (17.5), rebounds (12.0), blocks (2.0), steals (1.5), field-goal percentage (.560) and free-throw percentage (.667), while playing 32.5 minutes (second-best on team) in two starting assignments.
Thomas shared the Mountain West weekly award with Brigham Young's Jimmer Fredette.
