LAS VEGAS - The San Diego State swimming and diving team remained perfect on the season as it defeated UNLV, 159-134, in dual meet action Saturday afternoon at the Buchanan Natatorium in Las Vegas. Aztec swimmers recorded the fastest times in 10 swimming events including both relays and also won one of the two diving competitions.
With the win, SDSU improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rebels, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 3-4 (2-2 MWC).
Leona Jennings led the way for San Diego State with three individual first-place finishes plus a relay victory. The sophomore from Seattle captured top honors in the 100 back (56.13), 200 back (2:03.19) and 200 individual medley (1:43.76). She was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay squad that clocked 1:43.76.
The Aztecs also had a pair of triple winners in Stephanie Koch and Katelyn Weddle. Koch was first in the 100 (51.64) and 200 (1:51.90) freestyle events and swam the opening leg of the 400 free relay (3:27.78). Weddle won both the 100 (1:03.30) and 200 (2:17.39) breaststroke and was a member of the victorious 200 medley relay team.
The other SDSU individual top time was turned in by Kelly Marquenie in the 500 freestyle (4:56.10). The Australian also finished second in the 1000 free (10:05.79) and was on the winning 400 free relay squad.
Senior Emilee Jennings was involved in a pair of wins as she swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay as well as the third leg of the 200 medley relay. She also finished second in the 100 free with a mark of 52.15, a time that ranks as the ninth-fastest in school history.
Elsewhere, freshman Mikaela Macklin had a trio of second-place results as she finished just behind SDSU teammates in the 100 breast (1:05.31), 200 breast (2:19.04) and 200 individual medley (2:05.32). Jessica Crider recorded her best time of the season in the 200 free (1:52.94) while Brooke Vessey had the second-best time in the 100 fly (57.27) and was also on the winning 200 medley relay team.
For the diving competition for this dual meet, both schools used the results from the Wildcat Diving Invitational that was held Nov. 19-21 at the University of Arizona. The results from that meet had SDSU's Kristen Meier (233.30) winning the 1-meter event and finishing second in the 3-meter (225.60).
San Diego State will now be idle until the new year with their next meet being a double dual against Northern Colorado and Tulane scheduled for Friday, Jan. 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Aztec Aquaplex.
