No. 7 San Diego State Wraps Up Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic Action Against IUPUI Wednesday Night
No. 7 San Diego State (13-0) wraps up Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic action on Wednesday night when it faces IUPUI (5-7) for a second time this season. Earlier this season, the Aztecs faced the Jaguars in Oxford, Ohio, as part of the CBE Classic and emerged with the 61-46 victory.
The second-to-last non-conference outing for SDSU is set for 7 p.m. PT at the South Point Arena. There is no TV coverage for the game, but the contest can be viewed online at http://www.stours.sidearmsports.com/showcase/#liveevents. The tilt can also be heard on radio in Southern California on AM 600 KOGO with Ted Leitner calling the action.
San Diego State continued its best start to a season after beating San Francisco, 62-56. The victory extended the second-longest winning streak in the nation (13), trailing only Duke (21), matched the longest winning streak in 90 seasons of basketball on Montezuma Mesa, tying the 1955-56 squad, and established a school record for consecutive road/neutral victories (7).
The Aztecs accomplished the aforementioned accolades despite trailing by two points with 7:41 left the game. The San Diego State deficit was the latest the Aztecs have trailed in a game all season. SDSU, however, finished the game on a 21-13 run, which included four D.J. Gay free throws and a five-out-of-six performance from the line from the Aztecs overall in the final 19 seconds to put the game away.
Sophomore Kawhi Leonard matched his season high with a game-high 23 points on a career-best 10 field goals and equaled his 2010-11 high with a game-best 14 rebounds. His double-double was his eighth of the season and 25th of his career. Joining Leonard in double figures was Gay, who finished with 14 points and a game-high three assists, and reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Malcolm Thomas, who had 10 points and led all players with three blocked shots.
IUPUI, meanwhile, comes into the contest in the midst of a 26-day stretch away from home. The Jaguars have split their last two games, beating Ohio and falling to Duquesne. Prior to the Ohio game, IUPUI gave No. 2 Ohio State a run for its money in Columbus and led in the second half, before eventually falling to the Buckeyes, 75-64. Alex Young and LeRoy Nobles lead IUPUI with scoring averages of 17.3 and 15.9, respectively. Young, meanwhile, leads the team in rebounding, grabbing just under six per game (5.9).
After its tilt with the Jaguars, San Diego State will close its non-conference slate and the 2010 calendar year with a game vs. Occidental College on New Year's Eve. The Aztecs and Tigers will face off Friday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. PT at Viejas Arena.
