COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Katelyn Weddle has been named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the week. It marks the second career award for the sophomore from Yuma, Ariz., as she joins teammates Leona Jennings, Kelly Marquenie and Brooke Vessey as winners of the honor this fall.
Weddle, a native of Yuma, Ariz., recorded first-place finishes in six events while helping lead San Diego State to dual meet wins over BYU and TCU last week. The senior swept the breaststroke events in both meets, and also competed on the Aztecs' two gold-medal teams in the 200-yard medley relay events.
In SDSU's 173-127 victory against BYU, Weddle clocked times of 1:03.34 and 2:17.73, in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke events, respectively, and swam a leg of the 200-yard medley relay team that tied an Aztec Aquaplex facility record with a time of 1:43.28.
In Saturday's 173-123 win against TCU, Weddle posted respective times of 1:04.43 and 2:20.43 in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke events, and participated in the 200-yard medley relay team's winning effort (1:43.84).
The Aztecs are currently preparing to compete in next week's Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The three-day meet (Nov. 18-20) is hosted by UC San Diego and will feature athletes from over 20 collegiate teams including national powers Cal, Stanford and UCLA.
