SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team opened its fall competitive season on Sunday as it competed at the annual Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport Beach, Calif. The Aztecs had a total of six boats competing in three categories and turned in a trio of fourth-place finishes in each of those classifications.
In the Open Eight event, SDSU's "A" boat captured fourth place (of 15 entries) with a time of 15:25.11. The crew of Tanya Ochoa, Julie Moyer, Lauren Bischoff, Alyson Boyd, Mallory Scarpello, Paige Funk, Chelsee Brewster, Allysa McLauchlin and Carly Schlocker finished 30 seconds behind the winning entry from UCLA.
The Aztecs' "B" entry in the Open Eight took seventh place. That boat consisted of Vanessa Jones, Angela Strohbeck, Kayla McKenna, Michelle Boyer, Hillary Beard, Darian Kimball, Romaine Desclos, Caelie Fish and Natalie Marroquin.
In the Novice Eight race, San Diego State's "A" boat captured fourth place (of 13 entries) with a time of 17:05.37 as it finished behind entries from UCLA, USC and USD. SDSU's entry was crewed by Jennifer Miller, Rochelle Curdes, Alex Kudlicki, Kate Raymond, Emily Walton, Carissa Thomas, Mia Fournier, Robyn Corcoran and Katie Conlon.
The Aztec "B" boat (Courtney Siemsen, Ciara Estrada, Samantha Flores, Lindsay Miller, Anna-Michelle McSorley, Jana Sadler, Megan Allen, Carissa Carrier and Meghan Davis) finished ninth in 18:50.73 while the "C" boat (Brooke Williams, Julia Calish, Kristine Rezny, Liane Van Diepen, Jackie Cabral, Elyssa Aguirre, Marissa Shaw, Tatiane Werneck da Rocha, Chelsea Merrill) took 10th with a time of 18:52.28.
San Diego State's entry in the Open Four race finished fourth of 11 boats. That crew was made up of Emma Peck, Paige Funk, Chelsee Brewster, Allysa McLauchlin and Carly Schlocker.
Up next for the Aztecs rowers is the team's annual Alumni Day, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8:30 a.m. at Mission Bay. The following day the team will be back in action as it competes at the annual San Diego Fall Classic at Mission Bay beginning at 8:00 p.m.
