FORT WORTH, Texas - The San Diego State swimming and diving team remained perfect on the season as it defeated TCU, 173-123, Saturday afternoon at the University Recreation Center pool in Fort Worth, Texas. With the win the Aztec improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mountain West Conference.
Six different SDSU athletes turned in at least one first-place finish as the Aztecs won five of the first six events to take control of the contest.
San Diego State got off to a good start with the 200 medley relay quartet of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Brooke Vessey and Stephanie Koch swimming a winning time of 1:43.84. The Horned Frogs, however, took three of the top four places in the next event (1000 free) to take an early 20-16 lead.
SDSU then ran off four straight wins to establish a solid lead. Kelly Marquenie captured first in the 200 free in 1:52.94 in her first attempt at the event this season. Leona Jennings followed that with a win in the 100 backstroke (56.07). Sophomore Katelyn Weddle then won the 100 breast in 1:04.43 and senior Brooke Vessey finished first in the 200 fly at 2:05.10.
Jennings would go on to win two other events during the meet. She took first in the 200 back in 2:03.22 and added a victory in the 100 fly (55.61) to cap off her afternoon. Weddle would be a double winner as she added to her victory in the 100 breast with a win the 200 breast in 2:20.43.
The other Aztec swimmer with a first-place finish was freshman Mikaela Macklin, who won the 200 individual medley in 2:07.87. It was her best time of the season and the victory was her first as an Aztec.
On the diving side, junior Kristen Meier swept both the one-meter and three-meter events for the second consecutive meet. Her score of 311.63 in the three-meter was a new school record, breaking the old mark of 300.83 by Megan Flanagan set during the 2007-08 season. In the one-meter, Meier recorded a score of 268.05, a mark which qualifies for the Zone Meet at the end of the season.
Freshman Diver Anna Steiner took second in both the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 250.73 and 206.70 respectively. Both of those marks go into the SDSU record book as the eighth-best ever by an SDSU diver.
Up next for the San Diego State swimmers is a trip to Long Beach to compete in the three-day Arena Invitational which runs Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 18-20. During that same period, the Aztec divers will be in Tucson, Ariz., for the Wildcat Diving Invitational. The results from both of those meets will be used to score a dual meet against Utah, which is also competing in both meets.
