THIS WEEK
San Diego State will compete in a pair of Mountain West Conference matches this week, one at home and one on the road. On Thursday, Nov. 4, the Aztecs will host Brigham Young in a dual meet scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m. (PT) at the Aztec Aquaplex. Two days later, SDSU will be in Fort Worth, Texas, to face TCU in a dual meet at the Horned Frogs' University Recreation Center pool at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
HEAD COACH MIKE SHRADER
SDSU head coach Mike Shrader is in his fourth season with the Aztecs and has compiled a dual meet record of 35-13 (.729) during his tenure. Shrader was named the conference Coach of the Year at the conclusion of MWC championship meet each of the past two seasons (co-coach in 2009). His career record including eight seasons at Nevada stands at 124-25-1 (.830).
LAST TIME OUT
In a triple dual MWC meet in Albuquerque on Oct. 23, San Diego State picked up wins over Air Force (245-55), Colorado State (208-92) and New Mexico (211-89) to improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference action. The win over Colorado State was the first for the Aztecs in 12 seasons of league competition.
Five SDSU swimmers won two individual events apiece including Kelly Marquenie (500 and 1000 free), Stephanie Koch (100 and 200 free), Leona Jennings (100 back and 200 IM), Brooke Vessey (100 and 200 fly) and Katelyn Weddle (100 and 200 breast). In addition, Kim Bierwith captured first in the 50 freestyle and San Diego State also won both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
MWC SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Senior Brooke Vessey was named the MWC Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 26 after winning a pair of individual events and swimming on a winning relay team in the triple dual meet in Albuquerque. After opening the meet swimming the second leg of the Aztecs' 200-yard medley relay that won in 1:43.74, the senior swept the butterfly events, clocking times of 57.18 in the 100-yard fly and 2:05.99 in the 200-yard fly. Vessey's honor was the third in three meets this season for Aztec swimmers as freshman Kelly Marquenie and sophomore Leona Jennings have also received the conference's weekly award this fall.
MWC DIVER OF THE WEEK
Junior Kristen Meier was named the conference Diver of the Week for her performance during the meet in Albuquerque on Oct. 23. She is the first SDSU diver to win the honor since Megan Flanagan won it during the 2007-08 campaign. Meier picked up two third-place finishes in Albuquerque in her first competitive meet of the season. Her score of 279.80 on the 3-meter springboard ranks as the third-highest score in Aztec history, while her mark of 255.20 on the 1-meter board ranks sixth in program history.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
San Diego State completed its second consecutive undefeated home season during its 2009-10 campaign. After finishing a perfect 10-0 in home meets last season, SDSU's record at the Aztec Aquaplex stands at 20-3 since the facility opened in the spring of 2008.
TOP TIMES
With all nine Mountain West Conference schools having opened their seasons over the past couple weeks, San Diego State swimmers have recorded the league's top times in eight of the 13 individual swimming event that have been contested thus far. In addition, the Aztecs also have the top times in the 200 medley relay and second-best (by .05 second) in the 400 free relay.
A month into the 2010-11 season, Aztec swimmers are listed among the top 25 national times in four events. That group includes Kelly Marquenie (1000 free - 11th), Katelyn Weddle (100 breast - 8th; 200 breast - 21st) and Leone Jennings (100 back - 13th). In addition, SDSU is also listed in a pair of relays: 400 free relay (Meghan Zimmer, Stephanie Koch, Kelly Marquenie, Shaida Solimani) - 21st and the 200 medley relay (Leona Jennings, Weddle, Brooke Vessey, Emilee Jennings) - 23rd.
UP NEXT
The SDSU swimmers will travel to Long Beach, Calif., to compete in the annual Toshiba Classic Thursday-Saturday, Nov 18-20. At the same time, the Aztec divers will be in Tucson, Ariz., to participate in the Wildcat Invitational. With the Utah team also swimming and diving at the same two events, a dual meet between the Aztecs and Utes will be scored using the results from the Toshiba Classic and Wildcat Diving Invitational.
