SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's golf head coach Emilee Klein announced the signing Friday of Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to a National Letter of Intent. Alston, who is ranked 83rd nationally among prep recruits by Golfweek, will join the Aztecs in the fall of 2011.
"We're excited to add Amy to our San Diego State roster for the 2011-12 campaign," Klein said. "She is a solid player with great length off the tee. Her attitude and scoring ability will allow her to contribute immediately to our program's success."
Alston is a senior at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., where she has been a member of the varsity golf team all four years. She rounded out her prep career with a 44-5 overall record and was named Trinity League Player of the Year the last two seasons. Alston won her second consecutive league individual title last month and has helped the Lady Eagles claim three conference titles, going undefeated her first two seasons. She was a first-team all-county pick as a sophomore and second-team selection as a junior.
"I wanted to come to San Diego State because of coach Klein and the team," Alston said. "I know with such a great group of golfers, it will be an environment where I can improve my game and be able to help out the team as well."
This past summer, Alston was one of just four golfers chosen to represent Southern California at the Girls Junior America's Cup, which was played at the Morgan Run Golf Course in Rancho Santa Fe. She logged four, top-five finishes in the Toyota Tour Cup Series in 2010, and was 12th at the AJGA's Emerson Junior Golf Classic.
Alston, who also lettered in softball at Santa Margarita Catholic, has numerous ties to the San Diego area, including her grandparents, who are both San Diego State graduates. Her grandfather, the late Joe Alston, was a 12-time national badminton champion and is a member of the Breitbard Hall of Fame.
