SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head crew coach Jennifer Lewis has announced the signing of six student-athletes who will row for the Aztec program beginning with the 2011-12 season. Five of the six newcomers have 2-4 years of rowing experience while the sixth is an accomplished athlete who is expected quickly adapt to the sport of crew.
Tori Chavez is a local athlete who is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. The 5-9 Chavez is a swimmer and water polo player at RBHS and has three years of rowing experience with the ZLAC Rowing club located on Mission Bay in San Diego.
"Tori's work ethic, competitive spirit, and dedication to rowing were the qualities that really shined while we were recruiting her to SDSU" said Lewis. "I look forward to working with her over the next four years."
Allison Doran currently attends Folsom High School in Folsom, Calif. She has rowed for the Upper Natoma rowing club this past year and has one year of previous experience with Capital Crew in Sacramento.
"Allison is a team player and strong leader on her current team" said the SDSU coach. "I believe she will bring those strengths to San Diego State and make a huge impact next year."
Kaitlyn Goss is a senior at Xavier College Prep in Phoenix Ariz., where she has four years of rowing experience with the Xavier Prep crew program. The 5-9 Goss anticipates being a pre-med major at San Diego State.
"Kaitlyn is an efficient, strong rower," noted Lewis. "She pulls her weight and can move a boat. I believe she moves a boat well and I look forward to see her progress through the program over the next four years."
Sarah Hultin currently attends California High School in San Ramon, Calif. The 5-8 varsity volleyball player is also a national and Junior Olympic karate champion who plans to major in kinesiology or physical therapy at SDSU.
"Sarah has limited rowing experience, but comes to SDSU as a stellar athlete, said Lewis. "I believe her focus, dedication, and athleticism will help her succeed at San Diego State".
Emily Mauer, from Pacifica, Calif., comes to the Aztec rowing program from St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco. At 5-2, she has a been a part of the St. Ignatius crew team for the past three years.
"Emily is an experienced coxswain and familiar with the west coast courses," commented the Aztec head coach. "Her expertise and leadership skills will help the novice boat excel next year."
Sophie Poser is a softball and water polo athlete at Scotts Valley (Calif.) High School in northern California. The 5-9 Poser, who plans to major in nutrition, has two years of competitive experience with the Los Gatos Rowing Club.
"Sophie quickly caught on to the sport of rowing last year and moved into the varsity 8 at Los Gatos rowing club during her junior year," commented Lewis. "She is an amazing athlete with tremendous potential in the sport of rowing."
San Diego State recently concluded its 2010-11 fall season at the San Diego Fall Classic. The Aztecs will kick off their spring season with a meet against Orange Coast College on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8:00 a.m. on Mission Bay.
