SDSU Takes Second at UCSD XC Triton Classic

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The San Diego State continued its early season success Saturday with a second-place finish of 11 teams at the UC San Diego Triton Classic in La Jolla.

The Aztecs put two runners in the top 10, three in the top 20 and five in the top 27 to finish with 78 points. Cal Poly Pomona won the 6,000-meter race with 54 points, followed by SDSU, Central Arizona (102), UCSD (111), Cal State Bakersfield (120), Cal State San Bernardino (137), Regis (Colo.) (142), UC Irvine (198), UCSD Alumni (246), Pacific (301) and Western New Mexico (317).

"We had a very, very good team effort today," second-year head coach Shelia Burrell said. "We competed and performed well against a good field."

Marianne Hogan led San Diego State for the fourth consecutive race, taking second of 107 runners with a time of 22 minutes, 24.5 seconds. Violah Lagat, a four-time All-American at 2009 NJCAA Cross Country champion Central Arizona, won the race in 22:08.4.

"Marianne ran a competitive race against one of the top runners in the country," Burrell said. "I was proud that she was able to hang on and run another good race."

Sara Beyers was the Aztecs' second-place finisher for the fourth time of 2010, taking ninth in 23:15.0. Amy Brown (19th place, 23:52.3), Josefine Koskinen (21st, 23:58.5) and Alma Escobar (27th, 24:12.0) also scored for SDSU.

Jordan Davis (37th, 24:35.4) was the next San Diego State runner to cross the line, followed by Sabrina Rathor (57th, 25:27.9).

Melissa Bunn (75th, 26:04.4), Hanna Winokur (87th, 27:14.9) and Amy Reaser (99th, 29:22.6) all finished in the top 100, while Amanda Okun (101st, 29:41.1) made her collegiate debut at the 6K distance.

The Aztecs have a week off from competition before returning Oct. 22 for Cal State Fullerton's Titan Invite.
