The San Diego State men's tennis team enjoyed a strong first day at the SDSU Fall Invite at Aztec Tennis Center. J. Hunter Nicholas (Irvine, Calif.), Jose Sierra Short (San Juan, P.R.) and Giovanni Vaglietti (Johannesburg, South Africa) all advanced to the third round of singles play.
Playing in his first event for the Red and Black, Nicholas vanquished a pair of foes in the tournament's opening day. The freshman defeated Armaun Emami of UCSD, 6-0, 7-6 (4), before beating UC Irvine's Eric Gast, 5-7, 6-0, 10-4.
Sierra and Vaglietti both received byes into the second round of the tournament. Sierra defeated San Francisco's Germain Bahri, 6-3,2-6, 10-5, while Vaglietti toppled UCSD's Sam Ling, 6-3, 6-1. Both players also competed in doubles action.
The second day of the SDSU Fall Invite begins with doubles at 9 a.m., with singles play to follow.
