SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young saw the end of an eight-match losing streak as it out-played San Diego State to record a three-set (25-19, 25-23, 25-23) victory over the Aztecs Thursday night in Peterson Gym. The win was the first in conference play for the Cougars, who improved to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the MWC. San Diego State, meanwhile, saw its record drop to 7-10 (2-3 MWC).

SDSU junior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch tied for match-high honors with nine kills to lead the Aztecs as she also finished with six blocks, four digs and a pair of service aces while hitting .381 over the three sets. Her 14 points in the match was the most for either team.

Freshman Raegan Shelton chipped in with six kills and four digs for the Aztecs while setter Johnna Fouch notched 21 assists along with three blocks and a pair of digs.

Brigham Young was led by nine kills from Christian Measom and eight from senior Stephanie Snow. Nicole Warner led all players with seven blocks for the Cougars, who hit .105 for the match compared to .040 for San Diego State.

The opening set saw Brigham Young jump out to an 8-3 lead before San Diego State began to slowly get back into the contest. The Aztecs closed to within in point at 17-16, but the Cougars then ran off six straight points to take control. Two of those points came on kills by Measom and Nicole Warner with the other four courtesy of SDSU errors.

The second set started out much like the first with the Cougars taking an early 7-2 lead. This time, however, the Aztecs fought back tie the contest at 19-19. Both teams scored a pair of points before the visitors notched two in a row on an SDSU error and a combination block by Jennifer Hamson and Snow to take a 23-21 lead. From there, the teams traded alternated scoring points until Christie Carpenter's kill ended the set with BYU claiming the two-point victory.

After the break, the third set proved to be the closest of the three from start to finish as the teams were even until the Aztecs grabbed a 12-9 lead. BYU then took 10 of the next 12 points as it went up by five at 19-14 and forced SDSU to play catch-up once again.

Just as it did in the first two sets, San Diego State clawed its way back, this time eventually knotting the contest at 21-21. After the score went to 22-all, the Cougars grabbed two quick points on a Warner service ace and an Aztec miscue. A kill by Jessica Peacock brought SDSU back to within a point at 24-23, but Snow ended the match with her eighth kill of the evening.

Up next for San Diego State is a conference match against Utah on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:00 p.m. (PT) in Peterson Gym.
