SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State crew team will get its 2010-11 campaign underway this weekend this Sunday (Oct. 31), as it competes in the ninth annual Row for the Cure at North Ski Beach on Mission Bay. The event, which is hosted by UC San Diego, will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and will start at 7:55 a.m.

Established in 2002, the Row for the Cure event raises money from entry fees, donations and raffle tickets, with all proceeds going directly to Komen for the Cure and the fight against breast cancer. Of the funds raised, 75% are directed towards the San Diego community to support uninsured and underinsured women with breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and services, while the remaining 25% goes towards the support of national breast cancer research.

More than 540 athletes, ages 14 to 84, competed in the Row for the Cure in San Diego last year, marking the largest turnout in the eight-year history of the event. Last year's event brought in $21,392, bringing the cumulative eight-year total raised by the regatta to over $200,000. This season, event organizers have set a fundraising goal of $25,000.

San Diego State will have seven boats entered in Sunday's regatta. That number includes two Varsity 8 boats, a pair Varsity 4 boats, and three Novice Eight boats.
