SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's soccer players Tyrone Martin (Indianapolis) and Casey Meuser (Granite Bay, Calif.) have each been named among the best freshmen in the country, the website Goal.com announced on Oct. 27.

In the article entitled `College Soccer Professor: The Freshman Top 15,' author J.R. Eskilson named the top-15 freshmen through the first two months of the soccer season. Martin was picked as one of the top-15 freshmen, while Meuser was listed as `On the Bubble.'

Eskilson wrote that, "Martin had played every single minute for the Aztecs prior to last (Friday) against California. He has been their stalwart defender at center back this season. To ask a true freshman to command the defense is a tall task; however, Martin has responded confidently leading San Diego State to five shutouts and a 1.10 GAA.

"Even though Martin missed the clash against Berkley, he is still fifth on the team in minutes and the only field player on the Aztecs to play every minute (in the games he was available). Martin was also part of the very successful Indiana United Academy team and has looked comfortable playing at the next level. He has the size to take his game to the professional level, it is a just a matter of developing for a few more years in the collegiate game."

Martin has played 1,282 minutes this season, all in the back, which ranks fifth on the team. Martin was named to the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central all-tournament team last month.

Meuser, meanwhile, has played 1,298 minutes this season, a mark that trails only redshirt senior goalkeeper Brad Byrns (Alamo, Calif.). Meuser, who has mainly seen action in the back, but also some time in the midfield, has two assists in his first year. He has nine shots, including two on net.

The duo was previously honored by Top Drawer Soccer when they were listed in the College Freshmen National Top 100. In the latest release of the rankings (Oct. 8), Martin was rated No. 34, while Meuser was picked 85th.
