The San Diego State cross country team begins its championship season Friday at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships in Laramie, Wyo. The women's 6,000-meter race will begin at 10 a.m. MT at Jacoby Golf Course.

At last year's championships in Provo, Utah, the Aztecs finished eighth, but only 12 points behind sixth-place Utah. New Mexico, ranked 10th in the nation this year, won the meet with an impressive 24 points.

SDSU has improved at each meet this season, taking sixth of eight teams at the Aztec Invitational on Sept. 18, 13th of 24 at the Stanford Invitational (Sept. 25), third of 12 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (Oct. 2) and second of 11 at the UCSD Invitational (Oct. 9).

Marianne Hogan has led the way in all four reaches this season, doing so in impressive fashion. Hogan, who has twice been named the MWC Athlete of the Week, has three-top 10 finishes, including a course-record victory (22:04.2) of 169 runners at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Hogan also ran the fourth-fastest 6K (21:32.0) in school history at the Stanford Invitational.

Sara Beyers, meanwhile, has been the team's No. 2 runner in all four races, including a ninth-place showing at the UCSD Invitational. Alma Escobar and Amy Brown have also been in San Diego State's top five all of 2010.

At least year's championship meet, Rachel Williams took 21st to lead the Aztecs with a time of 22:39.9. Josefine Koskinen (44th, 23:59.1), Beyers (50th, 24:11.1), Michelle Martinez (53rd, 24:23.1), Jordan Davis (54th, 24:23.6), Brown (65th, 25:12.2), Hogan (68th, 25:26.4), Melissa Bunn (71st, 26:49.9) and Makenzie Mabry (73rd, 27:45.0) also ran in the race which, like this year, was run at elevation.

Results and photos from the race will be posted at TheMWC.com following the meet.
