BOULDER CITY, Nev. - In a field with 10 teams ranked in the top 50 nationally, the San Diego State women's golf squad finds itself in 14th place following day one action Monday at the UNLV Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the par-72, 6,329-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. The Aztecs, who are playing without one of their top golfers in sophomore Christine Wong, fired an opening round 18-over 306, and are two strokes out of 13th place and six out of 10th.
Junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted SDSU's low round of the day with her 2-over 74, highlighted by three birdies, including one on her final hole, to tie for 24th place. Teammate Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) was at 1-under par entering the final two holes of the afternoon, but then triple bogeyed the par-3 sixth hole and bogeyed the par-5 ninth to trail Enarsson by only one stroke and tie for 32nd on the individual leaderboard with a 75.
SDSU senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) are also separated by only one stroke. Roberts, who is making her 2010-11 debut, had three birdies, but also six bogeys and a triple bogey to tie for 64th place with a 6-over 78. Clark, meanwhile, was at even par through her first nine holes, but then had five bogeys and a double bogey in the afternoon to finish up in a tie for 73rd place with a 79.
Aztec senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) had just one bogey through her first five holes, before triple bogeying the par-4 15th and was never able to get back on track, tying for 89th place at 10-over 82.
Arkansas, which is ranked 19th nationally by golfstat.com, dominated the first 18 holes by posting an 11-under 277, for a whopping 17-stroke advantage over its' nearest rival Washington, which is at 6-over 294. Razorback Emily Tubert also owns a large lead over the rest of the 96-golfer field with her first-round 9-under 63, including seven birdies and an eagle.
San Diego State will be paired with East Carolina and San Jose State for Tuesday's second round, teeing off from the 10th hole at 8:10 a.m. PT. Live results are available at www.golfstat.com.
