The San Diego State women's tennis team wrapped up first-day action at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at nearby Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday. The event, hosted by SDSU, features the top NCAA Division I women's tennis talent in Southern California, Arizona and Hawaii.
In doubles action, the Aztecs went 2-0 as the sophomore duo of Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais defeated Dasha Lagmay and Mari Tadaki of Hawai'i, 8-3, in the round of 64. Eighth-seeded Sierra Ellison and Roxanne Ellison, meanwhile, received a bye into the round of 32 and beat the UCLA tandem of Megan Lester and Morgan Thomas, 8-1.
In singles, both Roxanne and Sierra Ellison picked up victories in the round of 128. Roxanne Ellison cruised to a straight-sets win over Morgan McIntosh of Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, 6-3. Her sister, Sierra, followed suit and emerged with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over LMU's Ashley Anderson. Wais and Olivia Colman, however, both suffered defeats for the Aztecs.
In the round of 64, Emma Cioffi took advantage of the round-of-128 bye and disposed of Tadaki in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Joining Cioffi in the next round was 10th-seeded and 65th-ranked Aguilar, who defeated USC's Lyndsay Kinstler, 6-4, 6-1.
The Ellisons, however, could not keep their momentum as both were eliminated from the main draw in straight sets. Senior and eighth-seeded Julia Trunk was forced to retire from her match and UCLA's Maya Johansson was the beneficiary of the outcome.
Day two action continues from Barnes Tennis Center on Friday morning.
