SAN DIEGO - San Diego State track and field head coach Shelia Burrell has announced the participating teams for the 2011 Aztec Invitational presented by Sheraton Mission Valley.
The two-day meet, which will take place on March 18-19, 2011, features a field that includes two-time defending national champion Texas A&M, UCLA (25th in 2010), Brigham Young (T-36th), Wisconsin (T-40th in 2010), Kansas State, Florida Atlantic, Northern Illinois and fellow West Coast powers Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State. Texas A&M (Big 12), Brigham Young (Mountain West) and Long Beach State (Big West) all won their respective conference titles. Other participating teams will be announced at a later date.
"We are looking forward to hosting such a quality field this spring," Burrell said. "This meet is an ideal season opener for many schools on spring break. With the weather in San Diego, the top notch nine-lane mondo track and field facility and fantastic community support, this should annually become a great meet."
This year's Aztec Invitational will be separated into three categories. The Open and College sections will be contested on Friday (March 18), while the Invitational portion of the meet will be held on Saturday (March 19). Once a premier invitational in the mid 90's, the 2011 invitational will arguably be one of the most competitive meets in the country.
"The goal of the invitational section is to have quality competition without a large field size in any event area," Burrell said. "This is the perfect meet coming off the intensity of the NCAA indoor championships."
