BERKELEY, Calif. - Despite outshooting California, 17-9, the San Diego State men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision Friday in Berkeley, Calif. The Aztecs, who are ranked No. 30 in the latest College Soccer News poll, dropped to 7-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the Pac-10, while the 10th-ranked (NSCAA/HendrickCars.com) Bears improved to 8-1-2 and 4-0-0.
A.J. Soares (11th minute), Chris Ortega (60th minute) and Servando Carrasco (66th minute) all scored for Cal, which is now unbeaten over its last eight games. It was California's first win over SDSU in over two years. San Diego State leads the all-time series, 17-13-2, including a 7-3-1 mark in its Pac-10 era (since 2005).
Aztec senior captain Raymundo Reza (Denver, Colo.) had a game-high seven shots, while junior captain Daniel Steres (Calabasas, Calif.), redshirt junior Pedro Adan (San Diego/Southwest HS), and freshmen Miles Byass (Highland, Calif.) and Casey Meuser (Granite Bay, Calif.) chipped in with two attempts apiece.
Redshirt senior Brad Byrns (Alamo, Calif.) made four saves in 90 minutes for SDSU, which played its third consecutive nationally ranked opponent, while the Bears' David Bingham was forced to make five stops in the shutout.
Bingham made an amazing save on a Steres' shot where he pulled the ball out of the upper corner and also stopped redshirt freshman Jordan Ongaro (Edmonton, Alberta) on a dribbling breakaway 25 yards from the goal.
San Diego State wraps up its three-match road trip Sunday at Stanford beginning at 2:30 p.m. PT.
<> Senior captain Raymundo Reza (Denver, Colo.) earned Man of the Match honors for his play in the front. Reza had a game-high seven shots, but was stopped by the Cal goalkeeper David Bingham on several occasions. Reza played 76 minutes in the loss.
