AZTEC STORY LINES
- San Diego State puts its 10-match home unbeaten streak on the line this week as San Jose State and top-ranked North Carolina travel to Montezuma Mesa. The Spartans (1-4-0) and Aztecs (1-3-2) will take the pitch on Friday at 11 a.m. PT, while the 21-time and defending national champion Tar Heels (4-0-1) invade SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. PT.
- The game vs. No. 1 North Carolina will mark the Aztecs' third match vs. a top-10 team this season. In the season opener, San Diego State dropped a 1-0 decision at ninth-ranked Santa Clara, and then fell by the same score nine days later at No. 9 Florida.
- Sunday's match vs. the Tar Heels marks the first time the nation's No. 1 women's soccer team has played at San Diego State. The Aztecs have been competing at the Division I level since 1989 and played a total of 409 games heading into the San Jose State tilt.
- As previously mentioned, SDSU enters the weekend unbeaten in its last 10 home games. The last time the Aztecs suffered a defeat at home was back on Aug. 23, 2009, when they were dealt a 3-1 loss by Cal State Northridge. This year, San Diego State is 0-0-2 at SDSU Sports Deck.
- Despite scoring only two goals in two games last week, the Aztecs seem to have found some rhythm on the offensive side of the ball. In the first four games of the season, San Diego State was credited with just 22 shots and seven shots on goal. In its last two outings, however, SDSU racked up 41 shots and 19 on goal.
- San Diego State is 8-1-2 in their last 11 vs. unranked foes and the Aztecs are unbeaten in 17 of their last 18 vs. unranked opponents (12-1-5) dating back to last season. San Jose State comes into Friday's contest unranked.
- SDSU received single goals from a pair of first-year Aztecs last week. In the 1-1 tie vs. Detroit, freshman Haley Palmer scored the equalizer in the 87th minute. Then in the match vs. Utah State, junior Kim Carcich gave San Diego State a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute, but the goal would not hold up as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
- SDSU and San Jose State will meet for a fourth consecutive season on Friday. The Aztecs are 5-1 all-time vs. the Spartans and have won four straight in the series. All five victories have been shutouts, including a 1-0 victory last year in San Jose. San Diego State is 3-0 vs. SJSU in games played on campus. The last time these two teams met in San Diego, the Aztecs posted a 3-0 win in 2008. Against teams from the Western Athletic Conference, a league San Diego State played in for four seasons, the Aztecs are 19-3-1 all-time.
- San Diego State is meeting North Carolina for the first time in school history and owns a 2-1 record vs. the ACC, going 2-0 vs. North Carolina State and 0-1 vs. Florida State.
- Youth is the name of the game for San Diego State. Through six games, head coach Mike Friesen has played six freshmen, four sophomores and two junior newcomers, while playing 17 players total. In the two most recent outings, Friesen started three freshmen and four sophomores vs. Utah State and three freshmen and sophomores against Detroit. Two of the four goals SDSU has recorded have come from players new to the team (freshman Haley Palmer, junior Kim Carcich).
