SDSU Windy City Collegiate Classic tournament notes in PDF Format
The San Diego State women's golf team ventures to the Midwest next week for its second tournament of the fall campaign, the 2010 Windy City Collegiate Classic, Oct. 4-5. The two-day, 54-hole event takes place at the Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill., just outside Chicago, with Northwestern University serving as host.
The 11-squad field will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final round on Tuesday. Teams will be grouped into threesomes with a staggered start from holes 1 and 10 both days, beginning as early as 7:30 a.m. CT.
Reigning NCAA champion and ninth-ranked Purdue will be the favorite, having easily claimed the 2009 Windy City Collegiate Classic by 14 strokes. The Aztecs, however, are one of four schools to be receiving votes in the latest Golf World/NGCA women's coaches' poll released Wednesday. Fellow Mountain West Conference members TCU and New Mexico will join SDSU, as will Central Florida, East Carolina, Iowa State, Northwestern, Texas Tech, UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Wilmington.
Live scoring for all three rounds will be available on golfstat.com.
Klein Makes Slight Change In Aztec Starting Five
Second-year head coach Emilee Klein made a slight adjustment to her starting five for next week's tournament in the Chicago area. Klein moved sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.), who competed as an individual for the Aztecs in Albuquerque, into the line-up, replacing redshirt freshman Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Ariz.).
The other four golfers will stay the same, as senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.), junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomores Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) and Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) each play in their second consecutive event.
Rewind: Enarsson Leads SDSU In Opener
San Diego State junior Malin Enarsson tied for third place with a 4-under 215 to lead the Aztecs in their 2010-11 season-opener at the 31st annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 17-18. As a team, SDSU was tied for second place through 36 holes, but a final round 309 dropped it all the way into seventh place at 24-over 900.
Enarsson did not have a double bogey or worse the entire tournament and led the 92-player field in par-4 scoring at 1-under. Her 215 matches her career-low and is tied for third in the all-time Aztec record book for a 54-hole event. The third-place performance also ties Enarsson's best-ever finish and is the lowest under par she has carded in her collegiate career (previous 1-under, twice). She came in 35th at the same tournament in 2009, a 32-place improvement.
Aztec sophomore Christine Wong was in fifth place after day one, but posted an 80 on the final 18 holes to finish 19th with a 223. Senior Stephanie Arcala tied for 33rd place with an 8-over 227, while sophomore Gina Clark, who was competing individually, was three strokes behind her with a 230. Transfers Rebecca Schneider and Alessia Knight rounded out the SDSU contingent in 79th and 86th place, respectively.
The Aztecs' seventh-place finish was five spots better than their performance at the same event in 2009 (12th) and is the first top-10 placing in their last nine tries at the annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invite.
Coming Attractions
SDSU completes its 2010 fall schedule at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev., Oct. 25-27. Looking ahead, the Aztecs open 2011 on Feb. 7-8 at the Arizona Lady Wildcat Invite in Tucson. The following month, San Diego State will play host to the inaugural Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn, set for March 20-22. The 17-team field includes 11 teams in the final 2010 Golfweek team rankings, including defending national champion Purdue.
Head Coach Emilee Klein
Head coach and 1996 Women's British Open champion Emilee Klein enters her second season as head coach at San Diego State. Klein's first season was a huge success, as the Aztecs won back-to-back tournaments and reached the NCAA regionals for the first time in six years. Klein is assisted by Tiffany Prats.
