The San Diego State cross country team looks to continue its early season success when it heads to Claremont, Calif., this weekend for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. The 6,000-meter course will be held on the Pomona College campus course and will begin at 8:45 a.m. PT.
The Aztecs are coming off a 13th-place finish of 24 teams at the competitive Stanford Invitational last Saturday, where seven of the eight SDSU runners set personal-best times over the 6,000-meter course.
Marianne Hogan led San Diego State once again, taking 23rd of 212 runners over the 6K course in a huge collegiate-best time of 21 minutes, 32 seconds. Hogan's time was 1:31 faster than her previous-best time, set in 2009, the fourth-fastest 6K ever by an Aztec and fastest since Lital Azulay ran a 21:14.20 in 2005.
Sara Beyers (71st, 22:39), Josefine Koskinen (109th, 23:28), Amy Brown (118th, 23:33) and Alma Escobar (152nd, 24:18) made up SDSU's top five and all bettered their previous 6K best times. Jordan Davis finished 165th in 24:36, while Sabrina Rathor (183rd, 25:04) and Melissa Bunn (191st, 25:34) each ran 6K PR's.
This weekend, Hogan, Beyers, Brown, Escobar, Davis, Rathor, Bunn, Hannah Winokur and Amy Reaser will make the trip to Pomona-Pitzer.
Other teams scheduled to compete on Saturday include Cal Lutheran, Cal Tech, Chapman, Claremont-MS, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State San Marcos, La Verne, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer, Privdence Christian, Redlands, UC Irvine and Whittier, while runners from UCLA will be running unattached.
The 6K rolling hills course starts on a lower soccer field, repeats the same loop three times and then finishes on the track. The course is located west of Mills Avenue on Pomona College's campus. To get to Pomona College from I-10, take Indian Hill exit north. To get to Pomona College from I-210, take Town Avenue exit south.
