San Diego State was unable to muster any offense on a hot Sunday afternoon and ultimately dropped a 1-0 decision to Cal Poly at SDSU Sports Deck. With the loss, SDSU closes the book on its tough non-conference schedule, which included three top-10 foes and four top-25 opponents overall, with a 2-7-3 record. The Mustangs, meanwhile, improve to 5-5 on the season.

Both teams used the opening minutes of the match as a feeling out period as a majority of the action took place in the middle of the field.

As the contest grew older, Cal Poly took advantage of an Aztec defense that was playing up and managed to get a pass through the SDSU backline. That is where Julie McKee had a breakaway chance on the right side of the field with an Aztec defender by her side. The midfielder then angled a shot toward the net, but it skipped through the box. Unfortunately for San Diego State, Bianca Burright ran toward the cage and her sliding kick went just inside the left post to give the Mustangs what would be the game-winner at 11:05.

In the second half, the Aztecs created some quality chances, but were unable to convert. Senior Michaela DeJesus had two opportunities, including a clean look straight at Cal Poly goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin, but was denied. Late in the match, Megan Jurado weaved her way through the Mustang defense, but was swarmed at the last second and could not get a shot off.

Each team had 11 shots at the final horn with San Diego State owning an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. In fact, the Aztecs outshot the Mustangs in the second half, 7-5, and put six on goal compared to Cal Poly's two. DeJesus, sophomore Sarah Halverson and freshman Monique Rootsaert had a team-best two shots. DeJesus and Halverson, meanwhile, led the squad with two shots on goal.

In net, Gauvin had a match-high eight saves and San Diego State goalkeeper Aubree Southwick stopped four shots.

SDSU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 1, when it plays host to TCU in its Mountain West Conference opener. First tap between the Aztecs and Horned Frogs is set for 4 p.m. PT.
