The San Diego State men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the season by remaining in third place in the final standings with a 54-hole total of 5-under 859 at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Auburn, Wash. The Aztecs had three players finish in the top 20 and posted their best round of the event Tuesday with a 5-under 283, to end up five strokes behind sixth-ranked Washington and 12 in back of first-place Pepperdine at the par-72, 7,304-yard Washington National Golf Club.

SDSU junior Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.), who opened the two-day tournament with a 4-under 68, duplicated that effort in the final round, notching five birdies and 12 pars before bogeying his final hole. Kang had dropped from first to 17th place after his second-round 77, but moved back up into a tie for sixth at 3-under 213.

Aztec true freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) had a solid first outing as a collegian, taking 15th place overall at even-par 216. Baek shaved a stroke off each of his rounds, concluding with a 1-under 71, including five birdies over the final 18 holes.

Senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the third SDSU player in the top 20, tying for 19th with his second 72 in as many days. Carlsson offset his two bogeys on the 10th and 18th holes with a pair of birdies on the seventh and 15th to end up at 2-over 218.

Sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) was the only Aztec not to rise in the standings in the final round, dropping from a tie for eighth place all the way into a tie for 33rd with an 80, including a pair of double bogeys and five bogeys in a 10-hole span. Berry finished at 7-over with a 223.

Rounding out the San Diego State group was junior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), who carded his best round of the tournament with a 72, going from 64th to 55th place at 12-over 228.

Pepperdine's Josh Anderson maintained his day one lead to claim medalist honors by four strokes with a 10-under 206. Idaho's Jarred Bossio and Texas A&M's Cameron Peck both set course records with a 63 over the final 18 holes.

San Diego State returns to action Oct. 1-2, at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs have only three fall events before resuming their schedule the last day in January 2011.
