San Diego State could not hold onto a first-half lead and Oregon rallied for the victory with a goal in overtime to down the Aztecs, 2-1, at the Oregon State Nike Invitational. The defeat drops SDSU to 2-5-2 on the season, while the Ducks improve to 3-3-2.
The Aztecs struck first in the 16th minute when Sarah Halverson scored her second of the season. The sophomore found herself at the center of the box and blasted her shot over Oregon goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee and into the top of the net to give SDSU a 1-0 lead.
San Diego State controlled the pace of the match for the next 20 minutes as it outshot the Ducks 5-1, with three forcing Parlee to make saves. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, the next Oregon shot resulted in the equalizing goal from Jen Stoltenberg. The Ducks' leading scorer was in the middle of the box and she put her shot into the upper left corner just out of the reach of Aztec keeper Aubree Southwick.
With the score tied coming out of halftime, Oregon seemed to take the momentum from its first-half goal into the second half. Over the first 23 minutes of the second stanza, four of the Ducks' six shots were on goal compared to San Diego State's one attempt, which was on net, from sophomore Marisa Fraticelli in the 61st minute.
The match became a possession battle beginning in the 68th minute as neither team attempted a shot for the next five minutes. Oregon's Stoltenberg snapped the streak with a shot that went wide, but teammate Tahne Apo put a scare into the Aztecs after her shot hit the crossbar in the 75th minute.
After going 16 minutes, 20 seconds without a shot, SDSU freshman Haley Palmer gave the visitors a chance to score the go-ahead goal, but had her shot stopped by Parlee. Palmer's attempt led to another Aztec opportunity as sophomore Megan Jurado challenged Parlee two minutes later, but she, too, was denied. Jurado's shot was the final legitimate attempt in the final 10 minutes of regulation as the match went into overtime.
Oregon attacked from the third tap of the match, logging two shots in the first two minutes. The Ducks' third shot, however, ended the contest as Scout Libke took a pass from Apo, who was on the right, and put her shot into the top right-hand corner of the net to give Oregon the victory.
The overtime match was the Aztecs' third of the season and third in their last five outings (0-1-2).
Jurado and Halverson each had a team-best three shots, with Jurado putting three on net and Halverson logging two. As a team, San Diego State had 10 shots total, with eight coming on net. Southwick, meanwhile, had six saves in a losing effort.
SDSU returns to action on Sunday when it takes on No. 18 Oregon State. First tap at the Oregon State Nike Invitational is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.
