AZTEC STORY LINES
- San Diego State hits the road this week and will take on a pair of Pac-10 Conference schools at the Oregon State Nike Invitational. The Aztecs will face Oregon on Friday in a neutral site contest at Paul Lorenz Field before playing the host Beavers on Sunday.
- The Aztecs are coming off a 1-1 week in which they beat San Jose State, 2-1, and were edged by top-ranked North Carolina, 1-0, at home. SDSU travels to the northwest looking to snap a two-match road/neutral losing streak. San Diego State is just 1-3 away from Montezuma Mesa, having been shutout in all three of its road losses.
- SDSU will look to build off its victory over San Jose State and its impressive effort vs. No. 1 North Carolina this week. The Aztecs got their offense going vs. the Spartans by scoring two goals, marking just the second time all season SDSU has scored on more than one occasion. Then two days later, San Diego State went toe-to-toe with the defending national champions and fell just short despite limiting the Tar Heels to its lowest shot output (7) since Oct. 14, 2007, when they had 10 vs. Wake Forest.
- San Diego State will look to reverse a disturbing trend vs. Pac-10 Conference institutions. In their last 10 matches vs. the conference, the Aztecs own a record of 2-7-1, going winless in their last five (0-4-1). San Diego State tied Oregon State last season, 1-1, at SDSU Sports Deck, and posted their last victory over the league back on Aug. 31, 2008, when it defeated Arizona State, 2-1.
- SDSU will be meeting Oregon on Friday for just the second time in program history. The two schools played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in Eugene, Ore., in their only match-up in 2004.
- The Aztecs and Beavers will meet for the ninth time in the history of both programs. SDSU is winless in its last six (0-5-1) vs. Oregon State with the tie occurring a year ago. San Diego State's only victory in the series came in 1991 when the Aztecs emerged with a 1-0 decision at home.
- San Diego State is 9-1-2 in their last 12 vs. unranked foes and the Aztecs are unbeaten in 18 of their last 19 vs. unranked opponents (13-1-5) dating back to last season. Oregon and Oregon State come into tournament play unranked.
- First-year Aztecs continue to make an impression on the team this season. In the last week, SDSU received a goal from freshman Carli Johnson in the game vs. San Jose State and the assist went to fellow classmate Haley Palmer. Through eight games, first-year players have accounted for three of the team's six goals, one of the squads' four assists and seven of the Aztecs' 16 points.
- On Monday, senior Britney Bennett was named MWC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Bennett scored the game-winner vs. San Jose State and was a part of a defensive group that limited both SJSU and No. 1 UNC to just one goal. The Tar Heels came into the weekend averaging 22.8 shots and 4.2 goals, but finished with seven and one, respectively.
COMING TO PLAY
San Diego State has played three top-10 teams this season in No. 9 Santa Clara, No. 9 Florida and top-ranked North Carolina and has proven it can play with the best teams in NCAA Division I. All three have resulted in 1-0 losses and with a break here or there, the Aztecs would find themselves in the top-25. As it stands, SDSU enters the week with a 2-4-2 record and looking to bounce back from its setback vs. the Tar Heels. If last year is any indication, San Diego State will respond in a positive way. Case in point, SDSU had a 2-0 lead at No. 2 Stanford, before falling, 5-2, to the Cardinal. Following the loss, the Aztecs went on a tear, going 13-2-5, which included a 16-match unbeaten streak and an eight-game winning streak, the rest of the way en route to a MWC title and appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
