San Jose State-San Diego State Final Box in PDF Format
The San Diego State women's soccer team extended its home unbeaten streak to 11 with its 2-1 victory over San Jose State Friday morning at SDSU Sports Deck. With the result, the Aztecs improve to 2-3-2, while the Spartans drop their fifth straight to San Diego State and fall to 1-5 on the season.
The Scarlet and Black got on the scoreboard first in the 11th minute on a beautiful sequence off a cross. Following an Aztec corner kick, freshman Haley Palmer possessed the ball on the left side of the pitch and sent a cross into the box. On the receiving end was another freshman in Carli Johnson, who headed the ball over the leaping San Jose State goalkeeper and into net. The successful attempt from seven yards out was the Santa Rosa, Calif., native's first of her career.
San Diego State held a 1-0 advantage for nearly 26 minutes until the Spartans went on the attack and earned a corner kick. Megan Molina took the kick from the right corner and sent the kick to the near post where Amanda Martin was waiting. The Spartan junior headed the ball and squeezed the shot inside the right post from close range to level the score.
In the second half, San Jose State controlled the action for the roughly the first 20 minutes, but did not pose a threat to Aztec goalkeeper Aubree Southwick. SDSU slowly began to regain form and finally broke through in the 69th minute when a pair of seniors hooked up for what would be the game-winning goal.
San Diego State earned a corner, which Michaela DeJesus took from the far left side. The senior from Dublin, Calif., sent it through the box and found Britney Bennett all alone. The San Diego product then calmly tucked her shot into the lower right-hand corner from five yards out to score her first of the year. SDSU has now had six different players score goals this season, including three first-year Aztecs.
Sophomore Megan Jurado and freshman Megan Erskine led San Diego State with three shots apiece. As a team, SDSU outshot San Jose State, 16-9, with each team putting five on goal. The Aztecs also owned an advantage in corner kicks, taking six, including five in the second half, to the Spartans' one.
Defensively, Southwick made a game-high four saves, while her counterpart, Meghan Maiwald stopped three.
San Diego State now awaits top-ranked and 21-time national champion North Carolina. The defending champs make their way to SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday with first tap set for 1:30 p.m. PT. Tickets for the highly anticipated contest are $5 and can be purchased on Friday at the Aztec Ticket Office at Qualcomm Stadium Window E until 5 p.m., or on game day at the Sports Deck ticket window.
