SAN DIEGO - Mike Bynum, a former student manager with the Aztec men's basketball squad and assistant varsity coach at Scripps Ranch High, has been named the director of player development for the SDSU women's basketball team, head coach Beth Burns announced Friday. Bynum will be in charge of all of the program's video needs.
"We are excited to add Mike to our staff," Burns said. "He has an excellent basketball pedigree and our director of player development position plays an integral part in preparing both our coaches and our team on a daily basis. His outstanding academic record at SDSU, as well as the valuable experience he gained while in coach (Steve) Fisher's program, will make Mike a big asset to our team."
Bynum replaces Jorge Cerna, who was promoted to assistant coach earlier this summer. Bynum's job duties at SDSU will include coordinating film exchange, editing game and practice film, developing team highlight videos and supervising student managers. He will also assist director of basketball operations Tammy Stephens in the planning and setting up of all women's basketball events.
"I am excited to return to my alma mater and for the opportunity to work with coach Burns and her staff," Bynum said. "This is a fantastic program and I look forward to helping the team to continue to win championships and advance in postseason play."
Bynum spent the last year as an assistant varsity coach with the boys' team at nearby Scripps Ranch High School under head coach Brian Keiser. Bynum was in charge of the Falcons' video editing, helped scout future opponents and on the court, worked with the squad's defense. Scripps Ranch went 16-11 overall and won two tournaments during the 2009-10 campaign.
Bynum became a student manager for the Aztec men's basketball team in September 2004, and over the next five seasons helped with practice set-up, game statistics, summer camps and team travel. Bynum supervised other student managers and assisted the squad's video coordinator with opponent scout edits. SDSU boasted a 103-61 record during his five-year stint, recording four-straight, 20-win seasons and claiming the 2005-06 Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament championships.
In the summer of 2009, Bynum was a counselor at both Lebron James King's Academy and the Steve Fisher Basketball Camp, where he supervised basketball players of various age groups, provided skill instruction and helped conduct drills.
Originally from Toronto, Bynum lived in San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Dallas before moving to San Diego where he attended Scripps Ranch High School, graduating in 2004. He earned his bachelor's degree in communications from San Diego State in May 2009 and was a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society. His father, Rod Bynum, is the head assistant men's basketball coach at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
