SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore golfer Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) is part of the field at the CN Canadian Women's Open, which got underway today at the St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Wong, one of just four amateurs in the event, qualified as a member of the Canadian world amateur team. In Thursday and Friday's first two rounds, she will play alongside Lisa Strom and Jennifer Rosales, who has won twice on the LPGA tour. The field of 156 players, which includes 48 of the top 50 players on this season's money list, will be reduced to the lowest 70 scores after 36 holes.

This week's tournament is Wong's second career LPGA event. Last month, she finished tied for 55th overall as the No. 2 amateur in the field at the U.S. Women's Open at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., July 8-12. The 2010 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year also won the B.C. Women's Amateur Championship by a whopping 11 strokes.

Last week, Wong was one of three women tabbed to represent Canada at the World Amateur Team Golf Championships in Argentina, Oct. 16-31. The biennial event will take place at the Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club and squads will be vying for the prestigious Espirito Santo Trophy. The competition will include 72 holes of stroke play with the best two scores each day counting toward the team total.

San Diego State begins its fall campaign at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, Sept. 17-18. Last season, Wong garnered all-conference accolades after winning two tournaments and leading the team with a 73.78 scoring average.
