SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team overcame an early deficit to register a 2-1 victory over Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The match was the second of four away contests to start the season for the Aztecs, who evened their record at 1-1. The Hornets, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2.

Sacramento State got off to a dream start with a goal in the second minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Leah Larot collected a pass at the top of the box and sped past the last SDSU defender before slotting a low shot to the far post that skipped under Aztec goalkeeper Aubree Southwick. The goal came at the 1:37 mark and the home side's lead would stand up for the next 25 minutes.

San Diego State answered at 26:42 when senior forward Michaela DeJesus took the ball at the top of the box and rocketed a shot to the far post went through a crowded penalty area and eluded Sacramento State keeper Savannah Abercrombie. It was DeJesus' first goal of the season and third of her Aztec career.

The game-winning goal came courtesy of a penalty kick that was converted by Sarah Halverson almost on the stroke of halftime. A tripping foul in the box by a Hornet defender sent the sophomore forward to the spot where she coolly converted with just 29 seconds remaining in the first period.

Both teams had opportunities in the second half, but neither was able to find the back of the net. In the end, Sac State held a 10-8 edge in shots while the Aztecs had the advantage in corner kicks (2-1) and committed fewer fouls (14-16).

The win was the 29th in her career for senior goalkeeper Aubree Southwick, who recorded four saves on the afternoon. Her counterpart, Abercrombie, did not record a save.

Up next for San Diego State is a trip east where it will play a pair of matches in the state of Florida next weekend. That road trip begins with a contest at Central Florida on Friday, Aug. 27, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. (ET) in Orlando.
