SAN DIEGO - Roxanne Ellison and Julia Wais, from the San Diego State women's tennis team, were recognized as Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) scholar athletes, it was announced today.

Ellison, a junior, and Wais, a sophomore, were both honored by the ITA. To be considered for scholar-athlete status, a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and be enrolled at their school for at least two semesters. It is the second straight year that Ellison has been named a scholar-athlete by the ITA.

The announcement is the latest academic accomplishment for the team. In 2009-10, six women's tennis players were named to the 2010 MWC Spring All-Academic Team, which requires a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Head coach Peter Mattera's team will begin their 2010-11 season with the first edition of the SDSU Fall Classic, scheduled for Oct. 1-3 at Aztec Tennis Center. During their grueling dual-match season, San Diego State will face nine teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament.
