Charlotte, N.C. - San Diego State senior golfer Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) posted a first-round 3-over 75 Monday afternoon at the 110th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the par-72, 6,559-yard Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Roberts was part of the afternoon wave Monday, teeing off on the 10th hole and immediately logging three birdies on her first five holes. The La Costa Canyon High grad then recorded two bogeys, a double-bogey and a par, making the turn at 2-over. After a bogey on the par-4 first hole, Roberts settled down with eight consecutive pars to end the afternoon at 3-over 75. She is currently in a 19-way tie for 56th place, just one stroke out of 39th place and two out of a tie for 28th.
Only 15 golfers finished the first round under par, led by Rachel Rohanna, who set a championship record at 7-under 65 to currently lead by three strokes over Brooke Pancake.
The U.S. Women's Amateur continues Tuesday with the second and final round of stroke play. The lowest 64 scores advance to match play on Aug. 11-14, with the champion being determined by a 36-hole match-play final on Sunday, Aug. 15.
The USGA had a record 1,049 entries for this year's championship with only 156 qualifying for the event. Roberts earned a spot by posting a 75 at a sectional qualifier at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif., on July 12.
