SAN DIEGO - San Diego State pitcher Addison Reed and outfielder Cory Vaughn became the first two Aztecs selected in the 2010 MLB draft when they were taken on Tuesday (June 8). Reed was a third-round pick of the Chicago White Sox while Vaughn went to the New York Mets in the fourth round.
Reed (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS), a preseason consensus All-American as a junior, finished the 2010 season with a record of 8-2 and a 2.50 earned run average. Along the way he recorded 90 strikeouts and walked only 16 over 79.1 innings while picking up second-team all-Mountain West Conference honors. As a sophomore in 2009, Reed was named an All-American as well as the National Stopper of the Year when he had 20 saves in 20 opportunities along with a 0.65 ERA.
Vaughn (Elk Grove, Calif., Jesuit HS) was a second-team all-conference selection in 2010 after earning first-team honors as a sophomore. He hit .378 this past season while leading the Aztecs in doubles (14), home runs (9), slugging percentage (.606), RBI (55) and stolen bases (15). He finished his SDSU career by hitting safely in each of his final 21 games, the sixth-longest streak in school history. Vaughn his .418 in league play and finished among the top 10 in four offensive categories.
