For the fifth time in league history and second consecutive year, the San Diego State men's golf team finished in second place at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. The Aztecs posted a final round 285 to card a 54-hole total of 5-under 847, trailing first-place and 35th-ranked Colorado State by 13 strokes at the par-71, 7,144-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Course.

SDSU's 847 is second best in school history at a conference championship and helped it move from third to second place, edging No. 12 UNLV by two strokes. The team, however, could not overcome the Rams' final round 7-under 277 and three-day total of 18-under 834, which easily broke the league record low by 10 strokes.

Aztec freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) dropped from second to third place with a final-round 1-over 72, but still posted a career low by four strokes with a 5-under 208, which ranks second in school history at a conference championship. Berry's third-place performance marks the fifth straight season an SDSU golfer has finished in the top three.

San Diego State sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) posted his best 18 holes of the tournament with a 1-under 70 to move him from 13th into a tie for seventh place for the second consecutive year with an even-par 213. Classmate Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) also had his best round of the week with an even-par 71, including four birdies, to tie for 16th place with a 3-over 216.

Aztec redshirt sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) couldn't match his second-round 68, carding a 76 with a pair of double-bogeys on the third and sixth holes to also tie for 16th place with a 216. Junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) rounded out the SDSU contingent in 19th place with a 217, including a 72 on Saturday.

Colorado State also claimed medalist honors as Ryan Peterson defeated UNLV's Eddie Olson by two strokes with an 8-under 205, which is just one stroke off the MWC record low of 204 set by New Mexico's Steve Saunders a year ago on the same course.

San Diego State will find out if it has earned its 12th straight NCAA regional bid on Monday afternoon, as the NCAA Division I Golf Committee announces the championship field at 3 p.m. PT. The Aztecs are playing host to one of the six regional tournaments at Carlton Oaks Golf Course in Santee, Calif., May 20-22.
