Sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) just barely missed becoming the first San Diego State women's golfer to advance to the NCAA national championships, as she was edged by a single stroke for the final individual berth Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ind. Enarsson tied for 12th place at 14-over 230, but Denver's Kimberly Kim, who is ranked 36th nationally, claimed the second and final spot with a 13-over 229 at the par-72, 6,417-yard Otter Creek Golf Club.

Enarsson was at 5-over par on the afternoon through 14 holes with Kim already in the clubhouse with a final-round 75. After stringing together eight consecutive pars, Enarsson bogeyed each of the final four holes to post an 81, falling one stroke short of forcing a playoff with Kim. Despite the end result, Enarsson's 12th-place performance is the second best in the school's six all-time NCAA regional appearances.

As a team, San Diego State took a respectable 13th out of 24 in its first trip to regionals in six years. The Aztecs had a final round 319 to complete their season at 90-over 954, two strokes in back of Mississippi, which finished 12th with a 952. SDSU entered the week ranked 46th nationally and placed above No. 28 Louisville (14th), No. 40 Northwestern (15th) and No. 42 Notre Dame (17th).

Aztec freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) continued her dramatic rise up the individual leaderboard with the team's low round of the afternoon at 5-over 77. Wong moved from 50th to 35th place with a 20-over 236, just one day after jumping 44 spots in the standings.

Classmate Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) also rose 13 places into a tie for 56th place with her best effort of the tournament at 6-over 78, following back-to-back 81s. Clark tied for fifth in the field in par 3 scoring at 2-over and ended with a 24-over 240. Junior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) rebounded from her second-round 86 with an 83 to tie for 92nd place, while junior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) completed the Aztec contingent in 105th place with a 258.

Fifth-ranked USC held onto its day two lead, winning by eight strokes over reigning national champion and second-ranked Arizona State with a 43-over 907. Southern California, ASU, Purdue, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Oregon and Kent State each earned trips to the NCAA national championships after finishing in the top eight.

Kent State's Martina Gavier garnered medalist honors with a 3-over 219, two strokes better than second place Lizette Salas of USC. Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora was third overall, joining Kim as one of the two individuals to advance to the NCAA championships, who were not members of the top eight teams.
