San Diego State freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) moved into second place with a career-low 65 Friday at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships in Tucson, Ariz. As a team, the No. 31 Aztecs cut eight strokes off their first round total with a 7-under 277, its lowest round ever in the 11-year history of the league tournament, but still dropped into third place by a single stroke with a 36-hole total of 6-under 562 at the Par-71, 7,144-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Course.

SDSU easily beat its previous low round at the MWC championships of a 280 at the 2006 and 2009 conference tournaments. It trails No. 12 UNLV, which matched a league record for the lowest single round with a 271, by a single stroke for second place, while both squads are behind leader and 35th ranked Colorado State, which enters the final 18 holes with a four-stroke edge at 11-under 557.

Berry had seven birdies and just one bogey in carding a career-low round by three strokes. His 6-under 65 ties a team season low, is the best ever by an Aztec at a conference tournament and ties for third in school history overall. Berry moved from a tie for fifth place into second place by himself with a two-day total of 6-under 136, just one stroke in back of leader Ryan Peterson of Colorado State, who is at 7-under par.

Redshirt sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.), making his MWC championship debut, was the second SDSU player to break the 70-barrier in the second round with his 3-under 68 to move from 12th to fourth place with a 2-under 140, highlighted by four birdies and only one bogey.

Sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) notched the team's first eagle of the week on the par-5 eighth hole, but dropped from fifth into a tie for 13th place with a 1-over 72 to move his score to 1-over 143. After logging five birdies on Thursday, junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) had just one in the second round with his 74 to tie for 17th place along with teammate sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) at 3-over 145.

The winner of this weekend's 2010 MWC championships gets the league's automatic berth to the NCAA regionals, one of which will be hosted by SDSU at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course in Santee, Calif., May 20-22.

San Diego State, which is seeking its first-ever MWC title, will be paired with Colorado State and UNLV for Saturday's third and final round starting at 8:40 a.m. MST from the first hole. Live results are available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
