Box Score

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State batted around in both the second and third innings, scoring four times in each frame as it went on to defeat Air Force, 13-4, Friday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win moved the Aztecs to the .500 mark both overall (23-23) and in the Mountain West Conference (8-8).

Junior right-hander Addison Reed took the mound for SDSU with a scoreless inning streak that had reached 20. The Falcons (11-35, 1-13 MWC), however, put a quick end to that run by scoring in the opening frame on a single by K.J. Randhawa and a triple by Addison Gentry with one out. Reed struck out the next two batters to avoid further damage.

It didn't take San Diego State long to respond as it sent nine hitters to the plate and put four runs on the board in both the second and third innings to grab an early 8-1 lead.

In the second, the Aztecs needed only two hits as two walks and two hit batters by Air Force starter Kincaid Koehler helped their cause. Cory Vaughn capped the scoring outburst with a two-out two-run single, the first of his three hits on the night. Koehler would eventually be tagged with the loss as his record fell to 2-8.

The third inning saw the home side get a solo home run from Ryan O'Sullivan, his third of the season, along with a two-RBI single by Brandon Meredith and another run-scoring base hit from Vaughn.

Reed, meanwhile, shut out the visitors from the second through fifth, but was touched up for a pair of runs on three hits in the sixth as Air Force closed the gap to 8-3.

SDSU got a run back in the seventh on a triple by Josh Chasse and sacrifice fly by Jomel Torres, then struck for its third four-run inning of the contest in the eighth to make it a 13-3 score line. The Aztecs got RBI singles from Blair Moore and Matt Parker in the eighth along with a two-run hit from Chasse.

Air Force scored a consolation run in the ninth, an unearned marker that resulted from an error, wild pitch and single off reliever Ryan Wynveen, who had come on to start the final inning. The junior lefty then got the final two outs to secure the victory as Reed was credited with the win to improve to 8-1 on the season.

In addition to Cory Vaughn, Josh Chasse also ended the evening with three hits and scored three times while driving in a pair of runs. Four other Aztecs had two hits apiece as eight of nine starters reached safely during the course of the contest.

Air Force and San Diego State will continue their weekend series with a single game on Saturday, May 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
